Looking at a finalised board traveller (ignore the Lead column for the moment):

Board Played 9x so 9 results

TOP  is 16

PAR is 8

Find your [or pick a] score.

On your side only (NS or EW) then

for each pair you tie with you get 1 mp

for each pair you beat  you get 2 mps.

The NS and EW match points are complementary, they add to a TOP.

If ‘R’ is the number of results on a traveller  then

a TOP is 2(R-1)

a PAR is half-a-top (R-1) and

the total mps on each side is R x (R-1).

If there are E pairs (includes you) on your side with the same or Equal  score then

you tie with (E-1) pairs and get (E-1) mps,

plus if  there are W pairs on your side with a Worse score then

you beat those (W) pairs and get 2 x  W   mps.

The MP award ‘M’ is  (E-1) +2 x W mps.

If this MP award is for a NS then subtract from the board TOP to get the EW award.

THERE IS AN EQUIVALENT CALCULATION METHOD

If  ‘B’ is the number of pairs with a Better score then

B + E + W = R ………..the end number of results on the traveller

The award formula is

E – 1 + 2 x W = M………the mps awarded

Subtract the first from the second and you get

W – B – 1 = M – R

Re-arranging

M= (R-1) + W –  B  or  M= PAR + W – B

“So you always start with a PAR and subtract 1 for each score that is  Better and  add 1 for each Worse score.”

This is much easier to calculate when just looking at your own score but not so good when scoring the whole traveller where the 1-2 method seems faster.

To ‘reckon’ your score on-the-go you will have to estimate the PAR plus/minus the DELTA (the  W–B number)

as if the board was played ‘R’ times (the number of results on a complete traveller).

To illustrate the WB method, the scorer has borrowed the Lead column above to do the NS Worse-thans and Better-thans. Often the W and B numbers will add to (R-1) except where equal scores are present.

The estimate of the final W-B value is based on realising that some pairs will be ‘lucky’ and succeed with better contracts even if none yet appear on the traveller so far, or will take the right action where you have not, or will fail with the ‘right’ lead where you have been ‘lucky’, and so on. It may be the board is unavoidably flat.

SIMPLER STILL

Given the estimate of W-B is speculative and crude, it is easier just to guess the W and B counts as though all boards are played only 6 times  so that the TOP is 10. The  PAR is 5. This keeps the arithmetic simple. Record the sum 5+W-B as a score out-of-10 on your score card.

At the end, add up the out-of-ten scores, divide by maximum possible (210,220,240,260) and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.

I’m  EW12  on ROUND5. Our club lead holds them to 3NT with declarer taking a deep finesse, but 4C by us  would be 3 off doubled (-500). It seems as though 4H should make with maybe with an overtrick. Currently the number of Worse scores are 0 and the Better scores are 4.  My guess is to add in a Worse score (of 420 to NS). So out of 6 boards with a TOP of 10 and PAR of 5, I would score this board    5 +1- 4 = 2 out of 10

The completed result from the board was 2/16  and  not 2/10  so I was out. Although  there were heart games bid by NS in later rounds there was also additional silliness by NSs to allow EW to play in clubs, but it wasn’t an absolute bottom!.
